Music is a critically important part of set and setting during a psychedelic experience, and can take your trip in a completely different direction. Never underestimate it’s impact; while the right song may save you from a bad trip, the opposite also holds true in some cases. It must be noted that the author’s recommendations are merely suggestions, and highly subjective. The only goal here is to broaden horizons and convince the curious to step outside of the box of standard psychedelic music tropes. Please give suggested songs a listen while sober first, and set up your playlists ahead of time; there is often no worse feeling than being too high to log into Spotify or Youtube.

Cannabis

Musically speaking, there is a reason stoner stereotypes exist. Whether smoked or consumed, weed tends to make you feel relaxed, happy, and contemplative. Large amounts of concentrates or edibles can even produce intense psychedelic effects, especially when one’s tolerance to THC is low. Familiar music takes on extra dimensions while stoned, and Cannabis will help you appreciate the subtle nuances of a song’s construction. It’s hard to go wrong with slowed down metal, 1970s rock, and reggae classics. But try opening your mind to some more avant-garde selections next time…
