So many people don’t get help because the “help” they receive only makes things worse. As soon as you mention that self harm has even fleetingly crossed your mind, you’re likely to be placed on involuntary hold in a psych ward that isn’t much different than being in prison, and given pharmaceuticals that might not be the right fit. Some people lose their jobs and get evicted from their apartments while they’re locked up. Many people with absolutely no intentions for self-harm have explored the thought of ending our lives in passing. Facing our darkest thoughts is normal, and being in denial of these things is more unhealthy. Mental health professionals need to better learn how to distinguish between this and when someone is actually in danger of hurting themself.
