Japan isn’t the best place for women, but attitudes about uncompensated work being women’s responsibility are still really common in the US too. A lot of conservative men really want to pass legislation that would force women into being financially dependent on men and stuck taking care of kids for free. A lot of women are opting out of having kids or getting married at all, and nothing infuriates these types of men more. They literally want women to be slaves.
