I’ve always said that people telling other people to “go to therapy” is a superficial way of pretending like they care about your mental health struggles, but in a way that doesn’t require them to make any actual effort. It just further stigmatizes people with mental health struggles, because it ignores that therapy is an overpriced privilege that only a few people can afford at all, and also goes under the assumption that all therapists are good people or good at their job. Just try opening up about how an abusive or incompetent therapist actively hurt your mental health, and people will absolutely dogpile you, blaming you for “not doing the work”, or making excuses for a therapist that they don’t even personally know.
