Finances are only part of the problem with lower birth rates, and will only go so far to increase them. The other problem that nobody is talking about is that, regardless of the money coming into a household, somebody is still expected to do the uncompensated work of raising kids, usually the mother. And young women today are taking a look at the situation and opting out because we simply aren’t interested in being on call 24/7 to work for nothing more than “meaning” or “fulfillment”, and particularly the thankless emotional labor involved in raising kids.
