Do the people who say this genuinely believe that only rich people should have the privilege of becoming physicians, researchers, or engineers?

I agree that contempt for poor people is behind the sentiment, along with a touch of misogyny. Conservatives want poor men to have no options other than joining the military or destroying their bodies on an oil rig, and for poor women to be dependent on a husband with no life other than having kids.
