40 years ago, women had just recently gained the ability to legally open their own bank accounts and lines of credit. Women from previous generations had kids not because they “felt ready”, but because they had few life choices other than to be wives and mothers. For a lot of Gen Z and Millenial women, the choice to not have kids is an exercise in freedom that women did not have until now.
